Visiting the site

Delivering web pages involves technical information such as your IP address, requested page, browser information and request time. Hosting and security providers may process this information to deliver content, diagnose faults and protect the service. We use such information where necessary for our legitimate interests in operating a secure, reliable website. The editorial pages do not include advertising trackers, analytics scripts, third-party fonts or embedded media players.

The local note composer

The Contact page uses JavaScript in your browser to turn the fields you complete into plain text. The composer does not submit a form to a server, send an email or save your draft to cookies or localStorage. Copying places the text on your device’s clipboard when your browser permits it. Downloading creates a text file on your device. Clipboard history, downloads, browser autofill and recovery features are controlled by your device or browser.

If you choose to send the resulting message through your email application, the message will be handled by your email provider and our email service. Do not put confidential recordings, passwords, sensitive personal details or third-party private information into your message.

Editorial correspondence

If you email us, we receive your address, name if supplied, message and any attachments you choose to send. We use these to respond, investigate corrections, maintain editorial records and handle privacy enquiries. Our usual basis is our legitimate interest in managing correspondence and maintaining accurate information. Where a legal obligation applies, such as responding to a valid rights request, we process information to meet that obligation.

Sharing and international handling

Service providers supporting hosting, security and email may handle information on our behalf. We do not sell correspondence or personal information. We may disclose information where required by law or reasonably necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. Where processing involves a restricted international transfer, applicable safeguards must be used, such as an adequacy decision or approved contractual protections.

Retention and security

We keep information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, including relevant legal, security and recordkeeping needs. Correspondence connected to a published correction may need to be retained longer than a routine enquiry. We consider the content, sensitivity and need to preserve an audit trail when reviewing retention. No email or online service can guarantee absolute security; share only what is necessary.

Your choices and rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights to access, correct or erase personal information, restrict processing, object to processing based on legitimate interests, and receive certain information in a portable form. Where consent is the basis, you can withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

You can raise a concern with us or complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. You do not have to contact us before approaching the regulator.
